Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis. Using Array or FISH?

Molecular biology and the Array-CGH technique (Comparative Genomic Hybridization of DNA microarrays) in particular, has been used increasingly during the last few years as an effective method of diagnosis on embryos obtained through In Vitro Fertilization. Nevertheless, as it was published this month in the Systems Biology in Reproductive Medicine magazine by our team of geneticists, the Fluorescence in situ Hybridization (FISH) used to analyze all the chromosomes of the embryo is an alternative technique, as effective as Array-CGH, and allows us to obtain a pregnancy rate per transfer with IVF greater than 60%.
In both cases, the aim is to genetically analyze the embryos using PGD before transferring them into the woman’s uterus, in order to implant only those that do not present anomalies and will lead to a pregnancy of a healthy child.
