TESE
What is a TESE?
TESE is an acronym which means Testicular Sperm Extraction. It’s actually a testicular biopsy that is only performed to retrieve testicular spermatozoids that will be used in the IVF cycle. The TESE name is used to differentiate it from the diagnostic biopsy. To increase the chances of finding spermatozoids, it may be necessary to remove several samples of testicular tissue.
When is it done?
It’s recommended to those patients who have no spermatozoids in the ejaculate (azoospermia), especially when it’s due to a problem in sperm production (non obstructive azoospermia).
What kind of anaesthesia is used?
It’s performed under local anaesthesia.
